Originating in the early 2000s Granddaddy Purple quickly became a favorite among medical marijuana patients in California where it was bred. This strain is a hybrid cross of two Indica strains, Purple Urkle and Big Bud and was created by Ken Estes.

What You Should Expect

Granddaddy Purp is easily recognizable between the sweet scent and the purple hue. Often the flowers are a deep purple and the buds themselves tend to have shades of both purple and orange throughout as well as dusted with a soft white resin. You will definitely want a grinder or a pair of good herb trimming scissors for this as it will stick a lot if you try and break it up by hand.

The scent that comes along with this strain is also one of its trademarked features – most of the time having a sweet grape and berry scent. When smoked you will definitely be able to taste the fruity hints around the earthy flower taste. The strain is indica heavy, making it exceptionally great for evening and night time use.

Medical Benefits of Granddaddy Purple

When it comes to using Granddaddy Purple as a medication – which is what it was bred for in the first place – you will notice that it has wonderful sedating effects. It can cause a bit of couch-lock, but if you are using this to treat insomnia then that is the desired effect in a way. You will find that you are very quickly brought to a place of euphoria that allows you to be calm, relax and sleep well throughout the night.

Indica heavy strains are also wonderful for issues like loss of appetite, chronic stress, and pain and muscle spasms. If you are looking for a strain that will help you get through the night without worry that you will wake up from pain then this is the perfect strain. It works well during the day for those who suffer from chronic pain and the effects last for a couple of hours at a time.

Flowering time for this strain is usually about 60 days – which is a pretty quick duration from seed to flower. The plants produce colorful buds but they also produce very large and very dense buds. This means that the yield from each harvest is excellent making it a strain that cultivators enjoy growing – especially since it is one of the most in-demand medical marijuana strains around.
