Should Companies Allow Marijuana Consumption On the Clock?

When it comes time for a break at work I know plenty of people who would love the opportunity to step out back and smoke a joint rather than a cigarette. Would it surprise you if I told you that for some people this is almost a reality?

While most companies in the cannabis industry won’t openly say it, most of them do consume marijuana at work – either for medicinal purposes or just because they can in states that allow recreational use.

Colorado has been a step ahead most of the way through recreational cannabis legalization and in this matter they are the first to openly discuss the issue. At least three major cannabis industry start-ups consume marijuana at work on a daily basis – and they’re making still millions.

What a great way to break the lazy stoner stereotype, right?

Flowhub, a Denver based Software Company run by co-founders Chase Wiseman and Kyle Sherman is one of those companies who allow their employees to consume marijuana at work. Due to restrictions at their location they are not allowed to smoke so they choose to partake through edibles, sodas and juices that are infused with THC.

“Our philosophy at Flowhub is to get s*** done,” said Sherman. “If it helps our employees get work done, then we don’t care if they consume at work.”

“It definitely surfaces new ideas and a fresh take on things,” said Sherman.

Well said, Kyle Sherman! I don’t think I could have said it better myself. Marijuana can medicinally be used to treat ADD and ADHD disorders and has a reputation for boosting creativity. That sounds like the perfect afternoon boost for a long day at work to me.

The two other companies who are being open about their cannabis consumption at work would be MassRoots and High There! Both companies are social media start-ups – and both are doing extremely well for the short time that they have been around.

“Being in Denver, we’re in the heart of the cannabis industry,” said Darren Roberts, cofounder of High There! “Cannabis is part of our culture.”

Most of the time consumption (for what seems to be all three companies) will occur in the afternoon portion of the day (perhaps a soda or brownie with lunch?) or during brainstorming sessions – what a perfect time to enjoy a tasty treat and get those creative thoughts flowing.

“I thought up MassRoots when I was smoking weed in my college friend’s apartment,” said Dietrich, whose firm has 30 employees and has raised $4.4 million in funding.

Sometimes, the best ideas are thought up during a smoking session – and there is no reason to hide that! Be proud of who you are and be honest about what helps you get work done. Marijuana can be a great tool in the workplace if it is utilized properly.

Obviously there would be some jobs where being under any influence at all could be dangerous – but for office jobs and creative careers marijuana could help more than you think. These companies are obviously doing something right, don’t you think?
