Thanks to the introduction of vaporizers as well as the state-by-state legalization of marijuana, dry vaping has now become a household name. With all sorts of adverts and talk about dry herb vaping popping up everywhere, maybe you have finally decided to try out dry vaping for the first time.

But how do you vape dry herb?

Well, you have come to the right place to get information on how to make your first dry vape session a pleasant experience as opposed to an amateur hour session. We are going to walk you through the process from preparing your dry herb vaporizer to inhaling your first vape.

To learn more, keep reading.

1. Preparing Your Vaporizer

When you get your vaporizer, the first thing you should do is read through the manual. The manual should give you a guideline on how to:

  • Charge
  • Load the chamber
  • Turn it on and off
  • Adjust temperature (where applicable)
  • Clean the chamber

If the vaporizer is new, it is advisable to conduct a burn-off and ensure there is no plastic residue in the chamber. Start by ensuring it is sufficiently charged. Then, make sure the oven/chamber is empty. After that, you can turn it on.

Let it heat at its highest temperature. Then, open the chamber and check if there is a scent of plastic. If there is no smell, then you are good to go.

This process ensures that the scent of plastic doesn’t contaminate your vape flavors.

2. Prepare Your Herb

Unlike a joint, you can’t vape herb that consists of large chunks. Hence, it is essential to grind the weed into a vaporizer-friendly consistency. Large chunks do not get effectively heated and hence, the vapor will lack consistency.

Additionally, if you grind the herb into a fine powder, it will restrict air flow as well as it will get into the mouthpiece upon inhaling.

To get the perfect level of fine consistency, you need a grinder. You can opt for a manual or electric grinder. A manual grind is recommended for first timers to avoid over-grinding the marijuana.

3. Packing the Herb

Now that you have finely ground marijuana herb on the ready, it’s time to load up the vaporizer.

When loading the vaporizer, it is essential to follow the load instructions provided in the user manual. For most vaporizers, the chamber/oven is located right under the mouthpiece. Hence, you need to first remove the mouthpiece in order to gain access to the chamber.

When loading the grounded marijuana herb into the chamber, avoid stuffing it inside. If you stuff it, it becomes compact which then minimizes the flow of air, as well as preventing even heating.  Minimal airflow will make inhaling more difficult and provide an inconsistent flavor.

The right way to load a vaporizer is by sprinkling the ground herb into the chamber via the opening. This ensures consistent packing.

4. Preheat the Vaporizer

Once you have packed the herb in the chamber and reset the mouthpiece, you need to turn it on and preheat the herb before vaping. Unlike the burnoff, do not crank the temperature to the max.

The preheating procedure should also be in the manual. However, if it is not illustrated, then turn on the vaporizer and set the temperature to the lowest setting.

Preheating is essential because it allows the vaporizer to get running. Think of it as warming up the engine of a car. You want the herb to start warming up before you commence vaping.

5. Vaping Temperature

Part of the vaping experience is setting a temperature that facilitates what you like.  For dry herb vaping, lower temperatures give you more flavor, but with low vapor density. Higher temperatures provide less flavor, but a thicker vapor.

As a beginner, you need to play around with the temperature in order to figure out which range does it for you.

If your vaporizer has an adjustable temperature gauge, start with a low temperature and work your way up. For every adjustment, sample the vapor until you find your ideal temperature range.

6. Inhale Easy

When inhaling dry herb vapor, don’t take deep breaths like a cigarette. Take slow shallow inhales that do not exceed three seconds. With deep breaths, you rarely get to enjoy the aroma and flavor of the weed.

Additionally, you might suck up some of the fine herd through the mouthpiece.

With shallow draws, you let the vapor accumulate before inhaling. Deep breaths cause cold air to enter the chamber and hence the heating of the herbs becomes disrupted.

Final Tip on Dry Herb Vaping

Dry herb vaping requires you to plan your session. Unlike a joint, you can’t vape, turn off the vaporizer and then come back and start again an hour later. Hence, you need to vape the entire herb in the vaporizer in one go. Otherwise, you have to empty the chamber and pack fresh herb.

Finally, after every session ensure that you clean the vaporizer properly; i.e the chamber as well as the mouthpiece. This prevents any residue from a previous session from contaminating the aroma of a new session.
