People have been making wine and growing cannabis for thousands of years. Combining the two is a more recent activity, but up until now, if you wanted to buy legal weed-infused wine, you’d get the alcohol that comes along with it, and the potential for hangovers.

The California based company Rebel Coast Winery says they want to change that by offering a Sauvignon Blanc that does not contain alcohol. The winemakers claim that their cannabis-infused, alcohol-free wine is the first of its kind and virtually eliminates hangovers. Even though alcohol is certainly the biggest culprit, the intensity of a hangover is caused by other contributing factors as well. Rebel Coast Winery will begin selling bottles in January, according to Paste magazine.

“After one glass you won’t be thinking your couch is a hippo with short legs or anything. Our goal is not to kill you after you’ve had a few glasses. The goal is to get giggly and naked with someone. We set out to mimic the experience you’d find with traditional wine; a couple glasses will put most people in a great place,” Rebel Coast said in a statement.

According to Rebel Coast’s website, each bottle has 16 milligrams of THC and costs $59.99. Their product will first be available to California residents when recreational sales kick off in the state in January 2018. Adults in other legal states and Canada will eventually be available to buy the weed wine later in the year, the company says. The winery plans to offer two more weed wines for purchase next year. Rebel Coast CEO Chip Forsythe tells Paste that they will be selling a rosé, and also an elevated sparkling wine sometime in 2018.

People who are addicted to opiates and alcohol have had success in quitting after using cannabis to help curb their cravings and reduce side effects. Perhaps in the future, alcohol-free cannabis wine could be used in moderate, healthy doses to help treat those suffering from alcoholism. Of course, this should be administered by a medical professional, but it’s something interesting to explore, and yet another way that cannabis has the potential to heal.

Is Rebel Coast Winery’s alcohol-free cannabis wine truly the first of its kind? Would you try the wine if you could? Do you think that cannabis-infused wine without the alcohol a good replacement for traditional booze? Please let us know in the comments.
